Cover of Villanovan

Hey everyone!
I just wanted to draw your attention to some really exciting news.  The featured article and cover story of the Villanovan is about PSN and its efforts with the Bookstore regarding sweatshop issues specifically with Russell

The Editorial is called Justice in the Bookstore

I just want to say hooray to PSN for raising this issue!  We have come a long way and this is hopefully one step we can mark as a successful step in our campaign!  I hope we can also keep in mind that,  if you do get a chance to read the article and opinion, this has been a crucial step, but we have a long way to go in regard to getting Villanova to :

 (1) Cut ties with Russell until they show improved efforts to correct the misgivings of Jerzees de Honduras workers

(2)  Get the Designated Suppliers Program signed on to at Villanova, which can happen with enough student support this semester!  (students tuitions as a collective whole make up the greatest percentage of Villanova's budget money, much more than the endowment, and it's a safe bet to say more than revenue from Athletics, however I do not have a statistic to support that)

That's all for now, be sure to look for our Letter to the Editor next week to clarify the goals of PSN and the VU Sweat-Free Coalition.  You can check here at the Villanovan's website; they publish weekly on Thursday.

All the Best,
The Progressive Student Network

Mike D

Hey Mike D,
I'm having trouble figuring out how to reply to your comment, there so I'll just write a regular post.  First off thank you for your interest in PSN and the actions we are working on.  I don't know Terry Mambu or John Gombola, but I'd like to see if we can get in touch with them to see if they do have an old code of conduct.  I'll be sure to bring this up at our next meeting this upcoming Tuesday, March 17.

Thanks again for your comment and your help, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Christina Bernardo of the PSN

The PSN Clothesline!

Hey everyone,
one last thing for tonight.  The Progressive Student Network successfully got the clothesline we have been working on up in front the Oreo facing Dougherty.  You can read about it in the Newswire and I'll try to get picture up in the next few days of how great it looks !!
              What the Newswire says is:
Be a Responsible Consumer: The PSN Clothesline
Do you know where your clothes are made?  Villanova apparel made by Champion, Russell, Nike, and Jansport make all their clothes in sweatshops that exploit laborers.  Russell just closed a factory in Honduras because the workers were trying to organize.  Join the Progressive Student Network every Tuesday at 5pm in the Center for Peace and Justice to help make sweatshop factor work a decent job!  Be sure to check out PSN's clothesline in front of the Quad and by the Oreo.  Throughout the day 03/10/09-03/13/09 For additional info check out his blog

It's all happening!  Hope to see you guys next Tuesday keep the word out!

In Solidarity,
PSN

Center for Peace and Justice Leaders Meeting

Hello all,
I just wanted to let everyone interested know that their was a Leaders meeting in the Center for Peace and Justice today and different groups got to discuss the projects their working on and the progress made on their initiatives.
I just thought I should let everyone interested know, that the majority of Peace and Justice group leaders at the meeting said they were going to spread the word about the Designated Suppliers Program and the Jerzees de Honduras factory case to their members and that they would be interested in joining a VU Sweat-Free Coalition (VUSFC).
some groups that were really interested were include, but is not limited to:
                   1. Blood, Water, Mission: find out more info about them here
                   2. Students Taking Action Now Darfur STAND: find out more info about them here
                   3. Villanova Environmental Group : find out more info about them here
                   4.  Villanova Face AIDS: find out more info about them here

Bread for the World is actually working on drafting a formal and public statement of support for the VUSFC that I'll be sure to post when we the send it to us at the Progressive Student Network.

And Businesses without Boundaries will allow a representative from the Progressive Student Network to come to their meeting to discuss in more detail about (1)how the apparel industry works right now, (2)what's wrong with it, (3)how Jerzees de Honduras factory is a good example of what happens when workers don't have a voice on the job, (4)how the Designated Supplier Program will work to prevent instances like the Jerzees de Honduras case from happening, (5) What PSN and the Villanova Sweat-Free Coalition is proposing, (6) what other schools have signed on, and (7) what the VUSFC needs from student groups if they decide to support the program.

PSN also has meetings coming up with various faculty members and staff at Villanova to discuss the DSP is greater depth and detail before it is presented by the Mission and Social Justice Working Committee of the Villanova Senate at the April 17 meeting
For more info on the Villanova University Senate please check out this link

Thats all for now, but there will be more to come!

WRC response to Russell Letter

Hey Everyone, If you have checked out Russell Athletics website recently you would see the black portion of this letter below.  Its their statement about Jerzees de Honduras.  The Blue portion of the letter is the WRC response to Russell's Letter and their efforts to set the record straight.   I was only to get the first page up so far.  When I can get the additional 3 pages up I'll edit this post.
